Kaylee Thompson has only one wish for her birthday this year – and she is asking mid-Michigan residents to help her make it come true.
The Alma teen, who turns 15 on Sept. 16, is asking the community to help her collect toys or donate money for her to take to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids later this month.
Kaylee is collecting toys and money in honor of Ian O’Hara, a local boy who lost his battle with cancer in July of 2016.
Kaylee and her family followed Ian’s story for three years and were inspired by his courage.
In a letter Kaylee wrote and sent out around the community, she shared her birthday wish and said why it was so important to her.
“For the years (Ian), as well as many other children, were in the hospital, they get to pick prizes. The hospital gets low on toys, prizes and snacks that go out to all the sick children. So for my birthday, I would love to gather as much as possible to be able to donate to Helen DeVos in honor of Ian,” Kaylee said in the letter.
Kaylee’s mother, Fawn, offered to throw her daughter a birthday party this year and was brought to tears when Kaylee requested this wish instead.
“It’s absolutely amazing,” Fawn Thompson said. “She’s always wanted to help others.”
Fawn added that her daughter has always had a selfless heart and she couldn’t be more proud.
“She’s always tried to help the underdog and was friends with people who didn’t have many friends,” she said. “It doesn’t matter who it is. If somebody needs help, she’s willing to jump in and do it.”
Fawn said once they have enough money and/or toys, her and Kaylee will go shopping with Ian’s family and then will head to Helen DeVos to deliver everything in person.
Kaylee and Fawn currently have a GoFundMe page for residents who wish to donate to the cause online.
Any other donations can be sent to Kaylee directly at 3131 Highlander circle, Alma, MI 48801 or by calling 989-506-8066.
