An “inspirational” young runner is raising money for the children’s hospital that helped save his life.
Danny Bryden, 14, is planning his second charity run in two years to raise money for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity after going through ten bouts of surgery at the hospital for kidney problems since the age of five.
The Annan Academy pupil is planning to run a 500-lap relay of the Everholm racetrack in Annan with help from his running club coach Joe Boardman and other members of the town’s athletics club.
Danny’s proud mum Julie said: “He is such an inspirational boy and we’re so proud of him.
“He just wants to give back to the hospital that helped him get to where he is today.
“His kidneys don’t function properly and he has high blood pressure, so he is on lots of different medication for that and has had ten operations at the sick kids hospital.
“Running is his release though and he is so determined to succeed.”
Last year Danny completed the Carlisle park run with coach Joe and raised more than £1,500 for the Edinburgh Sick Kids charity.
This year the pair are also raising for Nith Inshore Rescue after Danny worked with them as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Julie added: “The charities are really close to Danny’s heart so any help with sponsorship would be appreciated by him and by his family.”
The funds will be split between Nith Inshore, Edinburgh Sick Kids and also NSPKU, a charity close to coach Joe’s heart.
Joe, who has been involved in athletics for more than 30 years, said: “Two of my great neices suffer from a rare genetic condition called Phenylketonuria, so we’ll be raising for NSPKU who support them.
“Danny is a lovely lad and has been through a hard time in his young life.
“He’s quite stable and fit now though and has all the makings of a very good runner.
“Our race in Carlisle went superbly and we’re hoping this event will be even bigger.”
The run will take place on Sunday, September 17, at 11am on the Everholm racetrack.
